Adult Insect Morphology and Insect Classification

P. M. Choate

Insect classification involves the use of many morphological characters. The terms and their recognition are important tools in identification keys. I will introduce you to basic insect morphology terms (hopefully this will be a review) with examples of the more commonly encountered insects. Be sure you are able to find these structures on your insects. There are several exercises on your CD ROM that will assist you in reviewing insect morphology. Take the time to go over these. As you will see, it is very important for you to become familiar with these terms when you have to look for diagnostic characters. As stated elsewhere, your detailed exercises are on the CD ROM.
